    8 surgical texts, including an atlas and Current Surgical Diagnosis & Treatment.

  • Cancer Handbook
    Over 100 continuously updated peer-reviewed chapters provide scientific and clinical information on major areas of cancer biology and medicine.

  • Harrison's Online
    The classic internal medicine textbook in online form, Harrison's Online adds database-style searchability, continuous updating, clinical trials related to internal medicine, pretests for review of topics, and selected Internet links for additional reference.

  • Hurst's The Heart Online
    A searchable version of the primary cardiology textbook. The online version includes drug lists, an expanded set of images, selected Internet links, continuous updating, and current news in the field.

  • MDConsult
    Access to articles from more than 40 clinical journals, practice guidelines, drug information, 3,500 patient education handouts, CME, daily medical updates, and the full text of over 50 renowned medical text books:

  • Metabolic and Molecular Bases of Inherited Disease
    A fully searchable online version of The Metabolic and Molecular Bases of Inherited Disease, 8th Edition. Also includes new e-only content featuring seven new sections on cancer, a drug database, news updates and forum discussions.

  • Psychiatry Online
    Texts in the field of psychiatry and human behavior, including the DSM-IV-TR. Some books are downloadable to PDA.

  • R2 Library
    Textbooks in medicine, nursing and allied health.

  • STAT!Ref
    Over 20 clinical references, searchable by keyword, or browsable by table of contents. Stedman's Medical Dictionary is included in the service, though not listed as a separate textbook.

Freely Available Book Collections on the Internet: General Interest

  • Bartleby.com (Bartleby)
    Dozens of general interest works are freely available, from Thomas Paine's pamphlet "Common Sense" to a collection of Shakespeare's poetry. Of special interest are a classic edition of Gray's Anatomy (20th edition, 1918), and several current reference tools, such as dictionaries, writing aids and an encyclopedia.

  • Electronic Text Center (Virginia)
    An online archive of thousands of SGML-encoded electronic texts.

  • Google Books
    A growing catalog of thousands of books, both English and non-English. Books in the public domain may be downloaded. Books under copyright protection may be searched and Google provides information about whether they are available from Scott Memorial Library or local libraries.

  • Internet Public Library Books Collection (IPL)
    An index to over 20,000 items, including full books, short texts, and non-English texts. Health and medical topics are included.

  • National Academy Press
    "Read more than 2500 books online free" at The National Academies Press (NAP). The Press publishes the reports issued by the National Academies of Sciences and Engineering, the Institute of Medicine, and the National Research Council, as well as over 200 books a year on a wide range of topics in science, health care and engineering.

  • The On-Line Books Page (Univ. of Pennsylvania)
    A part of Penn's Digital Library initiative, this page is a catalog of thousands of electronic books and documents currently available via the Internet. Health and medical topics are included.

  • Project Gutenberg (Boston Univ.)
    Free public access to novels and texts in English for reading or downloading.
